Newmark Hotels, Reserves, Lodges & Residences has launched The Catalyst Hotel in Johannesburg. Set in a tree-lined suburb in the heart of the city's residential Sandton municipality, the 206-bedroom apartment-hotel has been built for R175 million (over $12 million)
Well-suited for short business trips, as well as long-term stays, the serviced apartments offer a "home-away-from-home" experience for visitors staying for an extended period in Sandton. Among the accommodation options, connecting units comprise a Premium Suite, which includes a lounge, kitchenette, full bathroom and king bedroom with minibar and satellite TV. The adjacent Deluxe Rooms have either king or convertible twin beds and bathroom with shower. The two-bedroom Executive Suite suit guests looking for more space during their stay.
A short distance away from the Sandton Gautrain Station, Sandton City & Mandela Square and the Sandton Convention Centre, the hotel provides easy access to retail and business opportunities in the area.
The property has a 24-hour concierge desk and reception. Other amenities include a gym, a full-service Sanctuary Spa and ample space for conferencing with three fully equipped, divisible spaces that seat a total of 120, with underground parking catering to both guests and visitors.
Chef Justin Jonah brings his fine dining experience at both large chain hotels and luxury boutique properties to the ground-floor restaurant, Kashew. The restaurant seats 120 inside, with a small deck alongside a plunge pool offering an al fresco experience to 30 diners. In partnership with Cape Town-based Camissa Coffee, Kashew brings a "double shot" of coffee culture to the "Joburg" caffeine scene. The 360-degree bar serves beer from the Cape Brewing Company, and has a range of cocktails and wines.
Good to know: The roof-mounted solar panels supply 90 percent of the power giving the hotel its green credentials. These are backed-up by a generator that can manage 100 percent of electrical requirements in case of load shedding.
The hotel has strict COVID-19 protocols in place, which allows for only 50 to100 rooms to be occupied at any given time, while the Kashew Restaurant wouldn't accept more than 60 guests at one time.
