The Shay, a Destination by Hyatt Hotel, Debuts in Los Angeles

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has announced the launch of The Shay, a Destination by Hyatt property. This is the brand’s first urban hotel in Southern California and it is located in the Culver City district of Los Angeles. The hotel has 148 contemporary rooms and suites and is home to two culinary concepts by Michelin-starred chef Danny Grant’s What If Syndicate group.

The Shay’s interior features leather-wrapped handrails, patinated metals and native hardwoods that allude to Culver City’s industrious past. A property-wide art collection includes 35 locally commissioned murals, installations, textiles and portraits, each accompanied by a QR code that invites visitors to learn more about the artist.

The hotel is adjacent to the Culver City Metro E Line. All of its accommodations feature workstations, oversized windows, curated artwork and modern décor. Select suites offer wet bars, large soaking tubs, patios, generous living spaces and separate work areas.

Adding local flair to the hotel’s experience are boutique design agency Studio Collective, whose portfolio includes downtown LA’s Hotel Figueroa, which is part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt; Culver City-based functional fitness studio Essers; LA-born craft grooming product company Imperial Barber; specialty spa brand milk + honey; and Culver City Art District’s ROSIES Foundation, a non-profit organization that sources employment for those with disabilities.

The Shay's two culinary concepts include Etta, a wood-fired eatery with indoor-outdoor seating on the ground floor, and Celestina, a Mexican-inspired restaurant and bar on the roof deck. What If Syndicate also produces the culinary experiences for social and business events.

The property also offers pop-up events as part of its rooftop pool experience, including music shows, yoga classes and comedy sets; an outdoor courtyard that leads into a modern ballroom; and a lobby featuring a cocktail bar and game room outfitted with eclectic seating and contemporary local art.

The arrival of companies such as WarnerMedia, Amazon Studios and Apple TV to Ivy Station are energizing Culver City more than a century after Thomas Ince built the city’s first film studio where Sony Pictures stands today. The Shay offers 8,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor event space. Meeting options include a modern boardroom that opens out into a courtyard with a gazebo and fireplace; a contemporary ballroom that connects to multiple pre-function spaces; and sleek breakout rooms. Each meeting space has nods to the destination with Culver City-inspired names like the Ivy Ballroom, Helms and Hayden Meeting Rooms and Blackwelder Boardroom.
