The Langham, New York Achieves Earthcheck Gold Certification

The Langham, New York, Fifth Avenue, has achieved the EarthCheck Gold Certification. This distinction, awarded by the sustainable travel and tourism organization, has recognized The Langham for eight consecutive years of commitment to environmental and social sustainability.

“Our team has worked tirelessly for the last five years to achieve EarthCheck Gold Certification,” said Richard Bussiere, managing director of The Langham, New York, in a press release. “From our engineering and maintenance team to our colleagues in housekeeping, culinary and front office, every individual member of our team has done their part to help us achieve this distinction, which is only awarded after a very rigorous and detailed review process.”

The Langham, New York has implemented a variety of measures to create a more sustainable guest experience, including offering the “Guest of the Earth” program, which gives hotel guests the option of re-using bed linens and towels to reduce water consumption; and in-room recycling that provides separate bins in guestrooms and suites for easy separation of recyclable refuse. The Langham also employs Orca technology, which re-purposes excess food into sustainable liquid, allowing for it to be sustainably recycled instead of being thrown away; and offers filtered water in re-usable bottles for meetings and events, and no longer uses individual plastic water bottles for guest use.

Employees of The Langham also complete hundreds of hours of community and environmental service, including partnering with Ronald McDonald House, The Bowery Mission and The HOPE Program.

EarthCheck is widely regarded as the world’s most scientifically exacting system for judging the sustainability practices of hotels and other businesses in the tourism industry, providing the businesses it reviews with a framework for best practices, which includes requirements specific to management systems, such as quality, environment, occupational health and safety, risk management, heritage and corporate social responsibility.
